Description

Carisprodol (brand name Soma) is a skeletal muscle relaxant acts as a central nervous system sedative, targeting GABA-A receptors. It is metabolized to meprobamate and prolonged use can lead to physical dependence. Discontinuing therapy may trigger a withdrawal reaction similar to those seen with other sedative-hypnotic drugs.

carisoprodol = N-isopropyl-meprobamate

Active metabolite: meprobamate

The drug is metabolized by hepatic CYP2C19.

Actions that can trigger withdrawal include:

(1) sudden discontinuation in a person who has been abusng the drug for a long time

(2) exposure to Flumazenil, which blocks GABA-A receptors, may precipitate withdrawal.

(3) drugs that enhance mepromate elimination

Clinical findings during withdrawal:

(1) anxiety and/or depression

(2) tremors or muscle twitchings

(3) body aches, muscle pains (myalgias) and/or arthralgias

(4) restlessness, irritability and agitation

(5) insomnia

(6) diffuse sweating (diaphoresis)

(7) chills

(8) nausea

(9) diarrhea
