Sparganosis involves invasion by a larva of the cestode genus Spirometra. One or more larvae may invade in or around the eye.
Occurrence: The larva gains access to the eye when a piece of raw tissue from an infected creature (often a frog) is placed over the eye. This may be done for fever or for an ocular complaint (pain, swelling).
Clinical features:
(1) edema of the eyelid
(2) excessive watering (lacrimation)
(3) ocular pain or irritation
(4) pruritis around the eye
(5) eosinophilia (variable)
(6) a subcutaneous nodule
Location of larva:
(1) subconjunctiva
(2) retrobulbar space
(3) anterior chamber of the eye
(4) subcutaneous
