Description

Radiation retinopathy damages small blood vessels, resulting in an ischemic retinopathy. There is often a latent period between exposure and clinical onset.


 

The patient will have a history of radiation to the eye or adjacent structures.

 

Early changes seen on fundic examination:

(1) capillary occlusion with dropout

(2) vascular incompetence with dilatation

 

Later changes:

(1) vascular proliferation

(2) telangiectasias

(3) microaneurysms

(4) vitreous hemorrhages and retinal exudates

(5) macular edema and exudates

(6) foveolar atrophy

 

Late complications in severe cases:

(1) retinal detachment

(2) rubeosis iridis

(3) phthisis bulbi
