Description

Gregory et al evaluated febrile patients in Puerto Rico. They identified clinical findings that can help distinguish dengue from other conditions. The authors are from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Patient selection: febrile illness in a patient from a region endemic for dengue

Predictors of laboratory-confirmed dengue for all ages of patients:

(1) retro-orbital pain (important at all ages)

(2) skin rash (important if >= 10 years of age)

(3) platelet count < 240,000 per µL (important if <10 years of age)

(4) absence of a sore throat (important if >= 20 yearrs of age)

(5) absence of cough (important if < 20 years of age)

In addition, leukopenia was a risk factor for patients >= 20 years of age.
