Rabeneck et al proposed a simple clinical staging system for patients with HIV infection which predicted the risk of progression to AIDS over a 3 year period.
Parameters:
(1) CD4 lymphocyte count
(2) history or presence of thrush
(3) history or presence of night sweats

Limitations:
• This staging scheme was reported in 1993, before the wide availability of newer treatment modalities. In patients being treated with newer agents, the rate of progression is much less.
