Bronopol toxicity is rare but potentially life-threatening.
Bronopol is 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol.
It is used as microbiocide in a variety of commerical products and may be an excipient in topical antiseptics.
Metabolic products: formaldehyde, formic acid, 2-bromo-2-nitroethanol, bromonitromethane
Complications of ingestion:
(1) altered mental status
(2) respiratory depression
(3) bilateral putaminal necrosis on T2-weighted CNS MRI imaging studies
Complications of skin contact:
(1) allergic contact dermatitis (which may affect a wide range of commercial products)
