If all members of a group communicate with each other, then the number of lines of communications between group members can be calculated by the communication channels formula.
Parameters:
(1) number of members in the group
number of communication channels in a group =
= (number of members) * ((number of members) - 1) / 2
In a large organization not everyone talks to each other. Rather there are multiple groups in a hierarchy with the maangers of a group forming another communicating group, so on up the hierarchy.
