Bradley et al listed complications that can develop in pediatric patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The authors are from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.


 

Complications:

(1) pulmonary infectious

(2) other pulmonary

(3) metastatic infection

(4) systemic

 

Pulmonary infectious complications:

(1) empyema

(2) necrotizing pneumonia

(3) lung abscess

 

Other pulmonary complications

(1) pleural effusion

(2) pneumothorax

(3) bronchopleural fistula

(4) acute respiratory failure

 

Metastatic infectious complications:

(1) meningitis

(2) central nervous system (CNS) abscess

(3) pericarditis

(4) endocarditis

(5) osteomyelitis

(6) septic arthritis

 

Systemic complications:

(1) bacteremia/septicemia

(2) septic shock (multi-organ failure)

(3) coagulopathy (DIC, hemolytic uremic syndrome)
