The course of a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura is gauged by the monitoring of clinical and laboratory findings.
A complete response consists of both of the following for >= 2 days:
(1) disappearance of possible neurological manifestations
(2) platelet count > 150 * 10^9/L
A durable remission is a complete response for > 30 consecutive days from the first day of platelet count recovery.
An exacerbation of findings is the presence of one or more of the following:
(1) occurrence or recurrence of neurological manifestations
(2) recurrence of thrombocytopenia (< 100 * 10^9/L for at least 2 days)
(3) worsening of thrombocytopenia without any identifiable cause
If the exacerbation occurs after a durable remission then it is termed a relapse.
If the exacerbations occurs before a durable remission then it is termed a flare-up.
Other clinical findings (cardiovascular manifestations, etc) may be included in the criteria.
