Feudtner et al defined a complex chronic condition (CCC) in a pediatric patient. A complex chronic condition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and identifies a patient who tends to have high healthcare utilization. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Patient selection: pediatric patient
Criteria for a complex chronic condition:
(1) medical condition
(2) reasonably expected to last >= 12 months
(3) involves one of the following
(3a) several different organ systems
(3b) 1 organ system severe enough to require specialty pediatric care (and probably a period of hospitalization in a tertiary care center)
Examples:
(1) malignancy
(2) severe genetic disorder
(3) hereditary metabolic disorder
(4) congenital heart disease
(5) congenital anomalies or malformations
The prognosisis worse for a patient with 2 or more CCCs.
