Trichomoniasis may be associated with a number of complications. A woman identified as having trichomoniasis should be evaluated for these conditions.
Associations:
(1) high risk sexual behavior
(2) increased prevalence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
(3) enhanced transmission of HIV if co-infected
Complications if pregnant:
(1) premature delivery
(2) low birth weight of the infant
(3) premature rupture of the membranes
It is uncertain whether metronidazole therapy during pregnancy results in improved fetal outcomes.
