Pruno (prison wine) is an illegal homebrew made by prison inmates. It can cause a number of problems if made improperly.
Pruno can be made from anything but often is made from a mixture of:
(1) fresh, canned or dried fruit
(2) ketchup
(3) sugar
(4) yeast
The mash is often kept in a plastic bag. It is heated intermittently and fermented over several days.
Complications:
(1) food botulism (if potatoes or other vegetables are used)
(2) food poisoning from bacterial contamination if improperly made
(3) lead or other metals if fermented in a metal container
(4) violence once intoxicated or to protect the pruno
(5) opportunistic infection in an inmate with AIDS
