Usually hepatitis E causes an acute hepatitis that resolves completely. Occasionally more serious complications may occur.

Diagnosis requires:
(1) demonstration of the hepatitis E virus (PCR, other)
(2) exclusion of other conditions (acetaminophen poisoning, other forms of viral hepatitis, Yellow Fever, etc)
