Necrotizing enterocolitis (enteritis necrotans) due to Clostridium perfringens is life-threatening disorder with a range of complications.
Patient selection: necrotizing enterocolitis due to Clostridium perfringens
Complications:
(1) bowel perforation
(2) peritonitis
(3) enterocutaneous fistula
(4) bacteremia
(5) toxin-mediated intravascular hemolysis
(6) multi-organ failure with shock
(7) sudden death
Since a person developing necrotizing enterocolitis often has an underlying risk factor (severe malnutrition, diabetes, neutropenia, etc) the infections may spread rapidly.
