Uterine artery embolization can be an effective therapy for uterine leiomyomata, but it also can have complications.
Patient selection: uterine leiomyomata undergoing uterine artery embolization
Complications may include:
(1) bleeding
(2) infection
(3) nontarget embolization leading to infarction (labia, other)
(4) premature ovarian failure
(5) fistula formation
(6) leiomyoma expulsion, which can lead to obstruction near the site of expulsion
Consequences of complications:
(1) unscheduled readmission
(2) need for surgical intervention
Risk factors for complications:
(1) submucosal leiomyoma
(2) vascular malformation with anomalous circulation
(3) operator error or inexperience
