Confabulation ("honest lying") may be associated with a number of underlying conditions.
Conditions associated with confabulation include:
(1) Korsakoff syndrome (thiamine deficiency)
(2) Alzheimer's disease or senile vascular dementia
(3) traumatic brain injury
(4) schizophrenia
(5) bipolar disorder
(6) aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery
(7) cortical blindness with Anton syndrome
(8) anticholinergic toxicity
It can also occur as a spontaneous condition, typically associated with amnesia and disorientation.
