The typical pH electrode is made of glass. The glass can be damaged by being subjected to conditions that can dissolve or damage the glass.
Conditions that can dissolve or damage the glass of an electrode:
(1) hydrofluoric acid or an acidified fluoride solution
(2) prolonged exposure to a strong alkali solution
(3) measurements taken at high temperature
(4) abrasive conditions
The electrode should be kept in a buffer with pH < 7 between measurements.
