Description

Hemolysis raises the potassium concentration after release of potassium within erythrocytes. This increase can be corrected for.

Parameters:

(1) measured potassium in mmol/L in the hemolyzed specimen

(2) free hemoglobin in g/L

corrected potassium in mmol/L =

= (measured potassium) - (0.3 * (free hemoglobin))

where:

• 0.3 is the mmol of potassium seen per g/L hemoglobin. Values in the literature range from 0.25 to 0.33 (see Table 6, page 1809, Jay and Provasek (1993).
