The dimensions of a cell may change after fixation and processing. The actual size of a cellular component can be determined by adjusting the measured value relative to the size of an erythrocyte (RBC).
Erythrocyte
Diameter in Microns
normal
7.2 to 7.9 microns (7.8)
macrocyte
>= 9.0 microns
microcyte
<= 6.0 microns
where:
• 1 micron = 10^(-6) meters
If the red blood cell diameter is normal:
(measured diameter of RBC in microns) / 7.8 = (cell feature measured in microns) / (actual measurement in microns)
actual measurement of cell feature in microns =
= 7.8* (cell feature measurement in microns) / (measured diameter of an RBC in microns)
