Pseudohyponatremia may be reported when measured by an ion-sensitive electrode in a patient with greatly elevated blood lipids. The true sodium concentration can be estimated by adjusting for the hyperlipemia.
Parameters:
(1) measured sodium in mmol/L
(2) total lipid concentration in mmol/L (= total cholesterol in mmol/L + triglyceride in mmol/L)
(3) serum triglyceride in g/L (0.01 * mg/dL = g/L)
(4) serum total cholesterol in g/L (0.01 * mg/dL = g/L)
Method of Steffes and Freier:
corrected sodium =
= (measured sodium in mmol/L) + ((measured chloride) / 100 * ((0.21 * (triglycerides in g/L)) - 0.6))
Method of Dimeski et al:
corrected sodium =
= (measured sodium in mmol/L) + ((total lipids in mmol/L) / 10)
Method of Ionescu-Tigoviste and Cheta:
corrected sodium =
= (measured sodium in mmol/L) + ((measured serum lipids in g/L) / 4.63)
