Divo et al developed the COTE index to evaluate comorbidities in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The authors are from multiple hospitals in the United States and Spain belonging to the BODE Collaborative Group.
COTE is derived from COmorbidity TEst (it just so happens that the second author is named Cote).

total index =
= SUM(points for all 9 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 23 (if only 1 cancer counted)
• A COTE index >= 4 is associated with an increased rate of death.
