Sprung et al listed criteria for the diagnosis of sepsis in an adult. The authors are from the Veterans Administration Systemic Sepsis Cooperative Study Group.
Criteria for the diagnosis of sepsis - both of the following:
(1) presence of 4 or more of the following findings
(2) documented within an 8 hour period
Clinical findings:
(1) one or more of the following:
(1a) shaking chills
(1b) body temperature > 102°F
(1c) body temperature < 96°F
(2) tachypnea (respiratory rate > 28 breaths per minute) or hypocapnia (arterial PaCO2 < 32 mm Hg)
(3) tachycardia (heart rate > 100 beats per minute
(4) hypotension (systolic blood pressure in the upper arm < 90 mm Hg while supine)
(5) one or more of the following:
(5a) WBC count < 3,500 per µL
(5b) WBC count > 15,000 per µL
(5c) percent neutrophils in differential count < 35%
(5d) percent neutrophils in differential count > 85%
(5e) band count in differential count > 20%
(6) thrombocytopenia (platelet count < 100,000 per µL)
(7) one or both of the following:
(7a) surgical or invasive procedure performed during the preceding 48 hours
(7b) obvious primary septic site
