Description

Bryant et al listed criteria for the Anterior Resection Syndrome (ARS). The syndrome can be hard to define since varies in its manifestations. The authors are from Barts and Queen Mary University of London.


 

Patient selection: anterior resection of the rectum for carcinoma with reconstruction

 

Features of the anterior resection syndrome:

(1) disordered bowel function

(2) impaired quality of life

 

Disordered bowel function may consist of:

(1) increased bowel frequency with or without urgency

(2) incontinence for feces and/or flatus

(3) evacuatory dysfunction with constipation

 

The syndrome may be transitory or it may persist for years.
