Disseminated leishmaniasis is an emerging disease in Brazil caused by infection with Leishmania braziliensis.
Diagnostic features:
(1) >= 10 mixed-type skin lesions, with up to 300 lesions present
(2) involvement of >= 2 body parts (head, trunk, arms, legs)
(3) positive leishmanin skin test
Mixtures of skin lesion types:
(1) acneiform
(2) papular
(3) nodular
(4) ulcerated
Other findings:
(1) very few or no parasites may be seen in skin biopsies
(2) mucosal involvement in about a third of patients
Risk factors:
(1) age > 19 years
(2) male gender
(3) agricultural worker
