Bochicchio et al specified criteria for the diagnosis of a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). The authors are from the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
Criteria for CAUTI - all of the following:
(1) presence of an indwelling urinary catheter
(2) presence of one or more of the following:
(2a) a body temperature > 38.4°C
(2b) urgency
(2c) frequency
(2d) dysuria
(2e) suprapubic tenderness
(3) one or both of the following:
(3a) a positive urine culture with >= 100,000 cfu/mL
(3b) urine white cell count >= 1,000 WBC per µL
where:
• cfu = colony forming units
