Eid et al listed criteria diagnosing an infection with Parvovirus B19. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Criteria for parvovirus infection - one or both of the following:
(1) detection of parvovirus in clinical samples
(2) positive IgM serologic response
Criteria for parvovirus disease:
(1) meets criteria for parvovirus infection (above)
(2) anemia, clinical findings and/or bone marrow biopsy findings consistent with the diagnosis
Criteria for diagnosis of organ invasive disease:
(1) evidence of organ involvement (by biochemical markers, radiographic changes, histologic changes, physiologic dysfunction, etc.)
(2) detection of parvovirus B19 in tissue sample from organ
(3) response to therapy directed against parvovirus B19
(4) exclusion of other infectious or noninfectious processes that can explain the clinical findings

Detection of parvovirus B19:
(1) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or other amplification technology
(2) nuclear inclusions with positive immunohistochemistry
Therapy for parvovirus B19:
(1) intravenous immunoglobulin
(2) with or without reduction of immunosuppression in transplant patients
