Gorschluter et al used criteria to diagnose neutropenic cholecystitis in patients with acute leukemia following chemotherapy. The authors are from the University of Bonn, Germany.
Selection: Patients with neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count < 500 per µL)
Criteria - all of the following:
(1) presence of fever
(2) right upper quadrant abdominal pain
(3) ultrasonographic demonstration of gallbladder wall thickening
where:
• Fever was an axillary temperature > 38°C or rectal temperature > 38.5°C.
• Significant abdominal pain was a response >= 3 on a Likert scale ranging from 0 to 10.
• Ultrasonographic thickening was present when the wall thickness was > 4.0 mm.
