Kaatz et al reported criteria for nonmajor bleeding in a patient receiving anticoagulants for atrial fibrillation or venous thromboembolic disease. The authors are from Hurley Medical Center (Flint), Michigan State University, North Shore-LIJ Health System and McMaster University.
Patient selection: receiving an anticoagulant
Criteria for nonmajor bleeding:
(1) any sign or symptom of hemorrhage (including evidence on imaging studies)
(2) does not meet the ISTH criteria for major bleeding
(3) at least one of the following:
(3a) requires intervention by a healthcare professional
(3b) results in hospitalization
(3c) results in an increased level of care
(3d) prompts a face-to-face evaluation (not just telephone call or electronic communication)
where:
• A telehealth consult probably would qualify for a face-to-face evaluation.
