Kwong et al listed criteria for therapeutic response in a patient with pure red cell aplasia. The authors are from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong.
Criteria for a complete response - all of the following:
(1) hemoglobin > 11 g/dL
(2) erythropoiesis in the bone marrow, with erythroid cells > 10% of the nucleated cells
(3) no further transfusion requirements
Criteria for partial response:
(1) hemoglobin <= 11 g/dL
(2) erythropoiesis in the bone marrow, with erythroid cells > 10% of the nucleated cells
(3) no further transfusion requirements
Limitation:
• The durability of the response relative to discontinuation of therapy is not mentioned. A relapse might be defined as recurrence after discontinuation of therapy.
• Nonresponse could be defined as hemoglobin < 11 g/dL, lack of marrow erythropoiesis and continued transfusion requirement.
