Llovet et al defined clinically relevant portal hypertension for the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) criteria.
Criteria for clinically relevant portal hypertension - one or more of the following:
(1) presence of any kind of esophageal varices
(2) platelet count < 100,000 per microliter AND splenomegaly
(3) hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) >= 10 mm Hg
where:
• HVPG is elevated when > 5 mm Hg. Esophageal varices are likely when > 12 mm Hg.
• Citterio et al defined splenomegaly as a diameter > 120 mm.
