Schutzman et al reported criteria for the diagnosisof an isolated scalp hematoma. These are a modification of definitions from PECARN. The authors are from Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Patient selection: infant less than 1 year of age with a scalp hematoma within 24 hours of a blunt head injury
Criteria - all of the following:
(1) no loss of consciousness
(2) acting normally
(3) pediatric GCS 15
(4) no evidence of an alteration in consciousness
(5) no signs of a basilar skull fracture
(6) no neurologic deficits
(7) no vomiting following the head trauma
(8) no seizures following the head trauma
(9) no bulging of a fontanelle
