Tande et al listed criteria for treatment failure of a patient with a prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Patient selection: diagnosis and treatment of a prosthetic joint infection
Criteria for treatment failure:
(1) ongoing evidence of infection without reimplantation
(2) subsequent surgery for infection after reimplantation
(3) additional debridement for PJI > 30 days after a debridement and implant retention (DAIR) strategy
(4) resection arthroplasty < 2 years after a debridement and implant retention (DAIR) strategy
(5) resection for any reason < 2 years after reimplantation during a 2-stage exchange
(6) death as a result of the infection
