Description

The Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) Group developed criteria for the diagnosis of clinically significant macular edema in patients with diabetes mellitus. This can help identify patients who may benefit from laser photocoagulation or other therapy. The group is coordinated through the National Eye Institute of NIH.

Patient selection: diabetes mellitus

Macular edema involves one or both of the following:

(1) any retinal thickening within 1 disk diameter (DD) of the center of the macula

(2) any hard exudate within 1 disk diameter (DD) of the center of the macula

Criteria for being clinically significant - one or more of the following:

(1) any retinal thickening within 500 microns (µm) of the center of the macula

(2) hard exudate within 500 microns of the center of the macula AND adjacent retinal thickening (may be more than 500 microns from macular center)

(3) zone of retinal thickening with diameter >= 1 disc diameter with any part within 1 disc diameter of the macular center

where:

• The second criteria does not include hard exudates that remain after disappearance of retinal thickening.
