Ratios involving serum CRP and platelet parameters may give insight into the presence of sepsis in a neonate. The ratio of CRP to mean platelet volume (MPV) showed a striking difference in septic neonates.
Patient selection: neonate with possible sepsis
Parameters:
(1) serum CRP in mg/L
(2) platelet count in 10^9/L
(3) mean platelet volume (MPV) in femtoliters
CRP to platelet ratio in mg per 10^6 platelets =
= (CRP) / (platelet count) * 1000
CRP to MPV ratio =
= (CRP) / (MPV)
Interpretation:
• An CRP to MPV ratio > 0.9 had a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 97% for neonatal sepsis.
• A CRP to platelet count ratio > 5.41 mg per 10^6 cells is associated with neonatal sepsis.
