Description

A patient with thalassemia major may develop a number of dental problems.


Dental issues for a patient with thalassemia major:

(1) malocclusion

(2) maxillary protrusion

(3) dental caries

(4) severe gingivitis

(5) abnormalities of the dental roots

(6) thin mandibular cortex (secondary to marrow proliferation)

(7) multiple diastemas

 

A number of defects in host defenses may occur, which can worsen the impact of dental infections:

(1) splenectomy

(2) immune defects
