Some patients with dermatomyositis may show signs and symptoms that "overlap" (shared in common) with other autoimmune diseases.
Dermatomyositis may overlap with scleroderma and mixed connective tissue disease (see 22.48).
Findings in a patient with dermatomyositis suggesting an overlap syndrome:
(1) sclerotic thickening of the skin
(2) contractures
(3) esophageal hypomotility
(4) microangiopathy
(5) calcium deposits
Additional findings to consider (from section 22.48):
(6) Raynaud's phenomenon
(7) pulmonary involvement
Patients with polymyositis do not develop an overlap syndrome.
