The administration of a percent aqueous solution may be dictated either by the weight or volume to give.
percent aqueous solution =
= (gram of solute) / (100 mL of solution)
If a given weight of solute is to be given:
volume in mL of a percent solution to give to deliver X grams of solute =
= X / (percent solution) * 100
grams of solute in Y mL of a percent solution =
= (percent solution) / 100 * Y
NOTE: A dilute solution may be made by adding the solute to 100 mL of water (weight for weight solution). For more concentrated solutions a volumetric flask is used to determine the final volume, which may require less than 100 mL water.
