Patient selection: diabetic foot
Abnormalities that can affect the gait of a patient with a diabetic foot:
(1) excessive pronation
(2) excessive supination
(3) weight-bearing on the mid-foot
(4) ankle equinus with lower limb length discrepancy
(5) abductory twist
(6) asymmetrical gait
(7) impaired balance
(8) excessive in-toeing or out-toeing
(9) drop foot deformity
(10) shortened foot after amputation
If uncorrected these abnormalities can result in:
(1) increased shear forces
(2) abnormal weight-bearing
(3) joint instability
(4) increased risk of falls
