Spiegel et al diagnosed bacterial vaginosis (BV) based on the Gram stain of the vaginal fluid. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Parameters:
(1) number of lactobacillus morphotypes (large Gram positive bacilli) per oil immersion microscopic field (OIMF)
(2) number of Gardnerella vaginalis morphotypes (small Gram variable bacilli) per oil immersion microscopic field
(3) number of other bacterial morphotypes (Gram positive cocci, Gram negative rods, curved Gram variable rods, fusiform bacteria) per oil immersion microscopic field
