Immunoperoxidase staining can be helpful in differentiating between spindle cell tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) GI stromal tumor (GIST)
(2) smooth muscle tumor (leiomyoma)
(3) schwannoma
(4) fibromatosis
Immunoperoxidase panel:
(1) anti-KIT (CD117)
(2) CD34
(3) smooth muscle actin (SMA)
(4) desmin
(5) S-100

where:
• A few authors report that fibromatoses may be positive on anti-KIT staining.
Limitations:
• Staining using immunoperoxidase methods may have false positives and negatives, depending on the quality of the antibodies and the method used.
• Considerable inter-observer variability can occur.
