Description

A patient with sitosterolemia accumulates a number of sterols absorbed from the diet. Management includes a reduction in foods containing sterols.


Restrictions:

(1) plants and vegetables high in sterols including nuts, avocados and vegetable oil

(2) shellfish and other seafood high in sterols

(3) margarine and other products that contain stanols (campestanol, sitostanol, etc)

(4) chocolate

 

Dietary restriction is done in conjunction with medications that reduce absorption of dietary sterols.
