Normocytic anemia can occur in a number of conditions.
Common causes:
(1) acute blood loss
(2) hypersplenism
(3) hemoglobinopathies (AS, SS, AC, SC, etc)
(4) anemia of chronic disease
(5) hemolytic anemia
(6) hypoplastic or aplastic anemia, including chemotherapy
(7) myelofibrosis
(8) early iron deficiency
(9) chronic liver disease (which may overlap with hypersplenism)
(10) hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
(11) renal failure
Less common causes:
(1) hereditary spherocytosis
(2) hereditary elliptocytosis
(3) G6PD deficiency
(4) pyruvate kinase deficiency
(5) paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)
(6) lead poisoning
(7) adrenal or pituitary insufficiency
