When evaluating a soldier for shell shock it is important to consider other conditions that may be coincident or alternative explanations for the clinical findings.
Blast-related conditions in the differential diagnosis of shell shock:
(1) blast-related concussion
(2) cerebral air emboli associated with pulmonary blast injury
(3) toxic gases
Other conditions:
(1) infectious disease
(2) other causes of head injury
It is important to perform a complete history and physical examination on the patient to include a fundiscopic examination.
