Rosenberg et al developed a simple discriminant function for evaluating a patient for liver fibrosis. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and members of the European Liver Fibrosis Group.
Patient selection: various liver diseases including hepatitis C, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD)
Outcome: significant hepatic fibrosis
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) N-terminal procollagen III propeptide (PIIINP) in ng/mL
(3) tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in ng/mL
(4) hyaluronic acid (HA) in ng/mL
Testing for biomarkers was performed n the Bayer IMMUNO 1 analyzer.
discriminant function for Scheuer fibrosis =
= (-0.014 * LN(age)) + (0.616 * LN(HA)) + (0.586 * LN(PIIINP)) + (0.472 * LN(TIMP-1)) - 6.38
discriminant function for Ishak fibrosis =
= (-0.08 * LN(age)) + (0.608 * LN(HA)) + (0.601 * LN(PIIINP)) + (0.511 * LN(TIMP-1)) - 6.26
