Collodion membrane is a transient keratinized membrane affecting a newborn that often precedes an ichthyosis. Rubio-Gomez et al developed a disease severity score to describe the impact of the membrane. The authors are from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Patient selection: newborn with collodion membrane
Parameters:
(1) generalized involvement
(2) ectropion (turning outwards of the lower eyelids)
(3) eclabium (turning outwards of the lips)
(4) abnormal ears and/or nares
(5) contracture of the fingers
(6) contractures of the toes
(7) contractures of the upper extremities
(8) contractures of the lower extremities
(9) respiratory impairment secondary to restricted respirations
(10) erythroderma
(11) edema of the hands
(12) edema of the feet
(13) edema of the upper extremities
(14) edema of the lower extremities
(15) hypernatremia
