Description

The distance that a person falls when falling from a building can be estimated if a direct measurement is not available.

Many buildings using a standard height for a story, which is usually around 10 feet but which may be higher or lower.

Factors affecting additional heights involved:

(1) extra height for the ground floor

(2) mezzanine (usually half a story)

(3) window or ledge height if not at floor level

(4) ground fall away from the ground floor

estimated height of a fall =

= ((number of stories) * (height for a story)) + (fractional extra height for first floor) + (fractional height for window, mezzanine, etc) +/- (fractional height for distance to the actual ground from ground level)

Because of the number of variables involved it may be necessary to directly measure the distance to get the most accurate value.
