Description

Disuse syndrome may occur in a patient with chronic illness. A patient with disuse syndrome can be a challenge to treat. Often an intense multi-disciplinary response is the only way to make a change.


 

A person with the disuse syndrome may show reduced physical functioning with:

(1) reduced mobility

(2) wheelchair dependency

(3) bedridden

 

Factors that may contribute to development of the disuse syndrome:

(1) chronic pain

(2) adverse effects from medication including fatigue and weakness

(3) malnutrition

(4) muscle deconditioning

(5) dizziness

(6) disease progression (cancer with ECOG 3 or 4)

(7) depression

(8) fear of falling

(9) family dynamics and role playing

(10) social isolation

(11) self-image and beliefs
