Use of St. John's wort may interact with a number of drugs, interfering with their action.
Plant name: Hypericum perforatum
Usage: depression
Active agent associated with drug interaction: hyperforin, which can induce CYP3A4 and other cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Drugs with reduced action:
(1) cyclosporine and tacrolimus
(2) oral contraceptives
(3) alprazolam
(4) barbiturates
(5) bupropion
(6) certain chemotherapy agents (imatinib, irinotecan, docetaxel)
(7) simvastatin and possibly other statins
(8) digoxin
(9) ketamine
(10) narcotics
(11) non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI)
(12) omeprazole
(13) phenytoin
(14) protease inhibitors
(15) voriconazole
(16) warfarin
(17) theophylline
(18) clozapine
(19) zolpidem
Co-ingestion can also increase body serotonin levels:
(1) antidepressants
(2) dextromethorphan
(3) triptans
