Dyslexia is a relatively common disorder that can cause errors in language and comprehension. These errors can affect patient safety if unrecognized.
When to consider testing someone for dyslexia:
(1) family history of dyslexia or reading problems
(2) recurrent episodes of transposing or reversing symbols, letters and/or numbers
(3) recurrent episodes of substituting a symbol, letter and.or number
(4) recurrent confusion caused by words that look or sound the same
(5) history of a learning disability, difficulty reading or problems with reading comprehension
(6) problems with remembering and/or using symbols
(7) difficulty in comprehending or transferring information
