Tee et al identified independent risk factors associated with quality of life for a polytrauma patient with spine injuries. The authors are from The Alfred, National Trauma Research Institute, and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Patient selection: polytrauma and spine injury
Early predictors for physical health quality of life (within first 48 hours):
(1) tachycardia (OR 1.9), with heart rate > 100 beats per minute
(2) hyperglycemia (OR 2.7), with blood glucose >= 8 mmol/L
(3) multiple chronic comorbidities (OR 3.0)
(4) thoracic spine injuries (OR 1.5)
Other factors to consider:
(1) severe ISS
(2) hypotension
(3) injury to >= 5 spine levels
